How Do I Journal?

It always seems like a great idea- sitting down and writing out all my inner deep secrets in a book that no one will ever see but me (hopefully). But- how many of you have sat down to write in a journal only to have your mind go completely blank?

“What should I write about?”

“How do I even write about all the things in my head?”

“What if someobody finds this- will I be totally exposed for all my weirdness?”

Over the past years I have had a lot of conversations about how to journal with my friends and loved ones. These are the typical questions that I get. This is how I realized that people need a little support in figuring out this process.

Here are my tips for writing in your journal:

  1. Just start writing. It doesn’t have to be earth-shattering or poetic. Shoot- it doesn’t even have to be full sentences. Just start writing and see what comes out. I will be honest, sometimes I try to write and even after giving it a good 5 - 10 minutes, nothing comes out and I decide to just write down a list of some sort and put the journal down.

  2. Lists are actually perfectly valid as an entry. I have two favorite lists that I like to write in my journal; 10 things I am grateful for; a page of “I am” statements. If this was a perfect world and I was a perfect person, I would write these lists every day. But, alas…I am only human so my perfect is perfectly imperfect!

  3. Like lists, I also have a few love letters I like to write in my journal sometimes if I am struggling for content. I will write a love letter to myself in which I praise myself for all the things I am proud of myself for for today- can even be silly like, “ I am so proud of you for waking up before your alarm today.” And the second love letter I like to write is a love letter to money. This is to help me be open to attracting huge amounts of money- because you attract what you put your attention on!

Journaling is a great way to get out of your head and slow down to process information, situations and feelings. It has been a great way for me to keep track of things I did- things I probably figured in the moment I would remember anyway, but I clearly have not. It is also a way for you to see how you have progressed throughout a period of time.
